I've been slowly making changes in our bedroom, and one of the latest is replacing our mirrored nightstands with something warmer and more natural.
I considered walnut, brown oak, and light oak—and loved them all. But before ordering, I pulled out the measuring tape and started thinking about what would actually work best in our space.
Here are 7 things to consider before choosing your nightstands.
1. Measure Your Space
Always measure the available space on both sides of your bed. Consider doors, curtains, outlets, and walking space. Furniture can look much smaller online than it actually is!
2. Check the Height
Ideally, your nightstand should sit around the same height as the top of your mattress. You want your lamp, phone, and water within easy reach.
3. Consider the Scale
Your nightstands should feel proportional to your bed. A substantial bed can usually handle wider nightstands, while oversized pieces can overwhelm a smaller setup.
4. Think About Visual Weight
Just because something physically fits doesn't mean it won't visually overwhelm the room.
This was a big consideration for me. I loved the walnut option, but because our bedroom is smaller and the nightstands I chose are fairly substantial, I decided a lighter wood would keep the room feeling more open.
5. Think About Your Future Bedroom
Don't choose furniture solely around pieces you already plan to replace.
Our current bed and curtains aren't permanent, so I chose a finish that will work with the bedroom I'm ultimately creating. I can see the light oak beautifully paired with either a cream or rich chocolate upholstered bed.
6. Consider Storage
Think about what you actually keep bedside. Drawers are perfect for hiding chargers, books, remotes, and all those little necessities while keeping the top looking styled and uncluttered.
7. Don't Forget Function
Can your lamp fit? Will the drawers open completely? Can you reach the outlet? Do you still have comfortable walking space?
Beautiful furniture should also make everyday life easier.
Why I Chose Light Oak
Ultimately, light oak won.
I still love the richness of walnut and brown oak, but the lighter finish gives me the warmth of natural wood without adding too much visual weight to our smaller bedroom. The brass hardware also gives it just enough of the elevated detail I love.
Once the new nightstands arrive, I'll share the finished look and the before and after.
Sometimes the right piece isn't simply the prettiest option—it's the one that works beautifully for your space and the home you're creating.
